Cancellation Steps

01

Sign in to your NYT account

Log in at nytimes.com (or myaccount.nytimes.com) in a web browser.

02

Open your subscription settings

Go to the Subscription Overview page and find the Manage Subscriptions section.

03

Start the cancellation

Click (or tap) Cancel your subscription (or Cancel) and follow the on-screen prompts.

04

Complete via chat or phone if prompted

The New York Times often routes cancellations to a live chat with a Care Advocate or to phone support at 1-800-NYTIMES (1-800-698-4637). Ask the agent to cancel, decline any retention offers, and request a confirmation.

05

If you subscribed through Apple or Google

If you were billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the NYT cannot cancel it. Cancel in that store's Subscriptions settings instead.

Refund policy

The New York Times generally does not refund the current billing period; cancelling stops future charges and you keep access until the period ends.

  • Cancellation halts future billing but is typically not prorated for the remaining days of the current cycle.
  • Any refund or partial credit is handled case-by-case by Customer Care, not automatically.
  • If you subscribed through the Apple App Store, NYT cannot refund you; request a refund from Apple via reportaproblem.apple.com.

Common issues

Cancellation may require chat or a phone call

For many subscribers the online Cancel button routes to a live chat agent or a callback rather than completing instantly, so plan for a short conversation and expect retention offers.

Wrong cancellation channel

App Store subscriptions cannot be cancelled on nytimes.com, and web subscriptions cannot be cancelled in iPhone Settings; using the wrong path leaves you still billed.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel The New York Times entirely online?
Sometimes. Some web subscriptions can be cancelled fully online, but NYT frequently directs the Cancel action to a chat agent or a scheduled call, so you may need to confirm with a representative.
When does my access end after I cancel?
You keep full access until the end of your current billing period; cancelling only prevents the next charge.
I subscribed through my iPhone. Where do I cancel?
Cancel in iPhone Settings under your name then Subscriptions, tap The New York Times, and choose Cancel Subscription. The NYT website cannot cancel Apple-billed subscriptions.
