Questions

YouTube Music pricing FAQ

How much has YouTube Music gone up in price?
As of Jul 2026, YouTube Music Premium (Individual) costs $11.99/month in the US — +20% from $9.99 in 2021, across 2 price hikes. That comparison is the primary plan charted on this page: current US list price versus the stored launch price, with every intervening change kept as a dated event. The latest change took it from $10.99 to $11.99/month on Apr 10, 2026, as reported by Variety. Each event links to a primary source — an official newsroom post or reputable reporting — listed in the pricing log below. Prices are US list prices in USD, excluding tax; promotional and app-store rates can differ. Subscription Price Guide is an independent index and is not affiliated with YouTube Music. Every statistic on this page — current price, total increase, hike count, highs and lows — is computed at build time from the stored event log, so the page, the structured data and the index cannot disagree.
How much is YouTube Music per month in 2026?
YouTube Music Premium costs $11.99/month for the Individual plan, $18.99/month for the Family plan, and $5.99/month for students in the US following the April 10, 2026 price increase. New subscribers paid the higher rates immediately, while existing members moved to the new pricing starting with their June 2026 billing cycle.
Why did my YouTube Music bill go up in 2026?
YouTube raised US prices on April 10, 2026, its first increase since July 2023. Music Premium Individual went from $10.99 to $11.99/month and Family from $16.99 to $18.99/month. New members paid the new rates right away; existing subscribers saw the change on their first billing date from June 2026 onward.
What's the difference between YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium?
YouTube Music Premium ($11.99/month) covers ad-free, background, and offline listening in the YouTube Music app only. YouTube Premium ($15.99/month) includes everything in Music Premium plus ad-free viewing, background play, and downloads across all of regular YouTube. If you only listen to music, the standalone Music plan saves you $4/month.
Is YouTube Music free to use?
Yes. YouTube Music has a free, ad-supported tier, but it plays ads, does not allow offline downloads, and on mobile the music stops when you close or switch apps because background play requires a paid plan. Music Premium removes all of those limits for $11.99/month.
Does YouTube Music have a free trial?
Yes. New YouTube Music Premium subscribers get a one-month free trial before the $11.99/month billing begins, and eligible students get a one-month trial before the $5.99/month student rate starts. Google also runs longer promotional trials from time to time.
How much is the YouTube Music family plan and who can share it?
The YouTube Music Premium Family plan costs $18.99/month after the April 2026 increase and covers the plan manager plus up to five family members aged 13 or older living in the same household. Each member keeps their own library and recommendations, and the cost split six ways is about $3.17 per person.
Is there a YouTube Music student discount?
Yes. Verified college students pay $5.99/month for YouTube Music Premium, half the $11.99 standard rate, up from $5.49 before the April 2026 price update. Enrollment is verified through SheerID, must be re-verified every year, and the student rate can be used for a maximum of four years.
